What Is HEX to Pantone Conversion?

HEX to Pantone conversion finds the closest Pantone Matching System (PMS) ink for a colour that was defined on screen. A HEX code such as #E4002B is simply an RGB value written in hexadecimal: it tells a display how much red, green and blue light to emit. Pantone colours are physical inks mixed to a recipe. The two systems have different gamuts, so there is rarely a perfect one-to-one equivalent, and the job of a converter is to find the nearest perceptual match and tell you how near it is.

This HEX to PMS converter turns your code into CIELAB, the colour space built to mirror human vision, and measures the Delta E distance to each of the 1,213 Pantone Coated colours in the database. Results are ranked from closest to furthest with an honest quality label, so a brand red like #E4002B comes back as an exact PANTONE 185 C while a pure screen red is flagged as an approximation.

Designers use it when a logo, website palette or app colour has to move into print: business cards, packaging, signage, embroidery and promotional merchandise all ask for a Pantone number rather than a HEX code.

How to Convert HEX to Pantone

Getting from a HEX code to the nearest Pantone colour takes seconds:

1. Enter the HEX code

Type or paste a 3- or 6-digit HEX code, with or without the #, or click the swatch to open the colour picker. The preview, RGB, CMYK and HSL values update as you type.

2. Read the ranked matches

The closest Pantone Coated colours appear instantly with a Delta E score and a rating: Exact, Excellent, Good, Fair or Approximate. Slide the match count from 1 to 20.

3. Compare swatches

Each result shows your colour stacked on the Pantone colour so you can see the shift, plus the Pantone's own HEX, RGB and CMYK values.

4. Copy or share

Copy one Pantone name, copy all matches as text for a brand guide, or share the page link; the URL carries your HEX code (?hex=E4002B).

HEX Colours vs Pantone Inks

Knowing why the two systems differ explains why some conversions are exact and others are only approximate:

HEX: light on a screen

A HEX code is three bytes of red, green and blue light (00 to FF each). It is additive: all three at full power make white.

HEX: 16.7 million values

256 × 256 × 256 combinations, but they only describe sRGB. Wide-gamut displays and print inks can show colours HEX cannot name.

HEX: device-dependent

The same #E4002B looks different on a phone, a laptop and a TV because panels, brightness and calibration vary.

Pantone: pre-mixed ink

Every Pantone colour is a recipe of base inks. Printers mix it once and it prints the same on the first and the ten-thousandth sheet.

Pantone: a global reference

Say PANTONE 185 C to any print shop in the world and they open the same swatch. That is why brand guides specify Pantone, not HEX.

Pantone: different gamut

Inks can reach oranges, greens and metallics no screen shows, yet cannot reproduce pure sRGB blue or red. Delta E tells you which side of the gap you are on.

Pantone to HEX: Look Up Any PMS Code

The reverse direction is just as common: a brand guide lists PANTONE 185 C and the web team needs the HEX. Open the Pantone → HEX tab, type the number or the name, and copy the HEX, RGB or CMYK value. Here are the codes people look up most, straight from the database:

PANTONE 185 C#E4002BPANTONE Reflex Blue C#001489PANTONE Process Blue C#0085CAPANTONE Cool Gray 9 C#75787BPANTONE Black C#2D2926PANTONE Warm Red C#F9423APANTONE Yellow C#FEDD00PANTONE Orange 021 C#FE5000PANTONE 286 C#0032A0PANTONE 485 C#DA291CPANTONE Green C#00AB84PANTONE Rhodamine Red C#E10098PANTONE Blue 072 C#10069FPANTONE Violet C#440099PANTONE 300 C#005EB8

Pantone publishes official sRGB equivalents for its Coated library; these are what the lookup returns. They are the values to put in a CSS file or a design token, but they remain a screen approximation of an ink.

Understanding Delta E Colour Distance

Every match carries a CIE76 Delta E value, the perceptual distance between your HEX colour and the Pantone colour in CIELAB space:

Delta E scale

ΔE < 1.0— Exact

Indistinguishable to the eye

ΔE 1.0 – 2.0— Excellent

Visible only side by side

ΔE 2.0 – 3.5— Good

Slight shift, fine for most print

ΔE 3.5 – 5.0— Fair

Noticeable, check a swatch first

ΔE > 5.0— Approximate

A different colour; adjust the source

Why not compare HEX digits?

Two HEX codes that differ by the same amount can look very different to a person: the eye is far more sensitive to changes in greens than in blues. Comparing raw RGB numbers would rank matches wrongly.

CIELAB spaces colours by how they are perceived (L* for lightness, a* green to red, b* blue to yellow), so a Delta E of 2 means the same visual step whether the colour is red, teal or grey. The converter uses the CIE76 formula, the industry baseline for spot-colour matching.

For brand-critical work, aim for a match under 2.0 and confirm it against a physical Pantone guide under the lighting the print will be seen in.

When You Need a Pantone Number for a HEX Colour

Brand guidelines

Lock the logo colour as a Pantone code so every printer, embroiderer and sign maker reproduces it identically.

Web-to-print

A palette designed for a website has to survive business cards, brochures and packaging. Convert once, specify the spot ink.

Merchandise and apparel

Screen printers and embroidery suppliers quote thread and ink by Pantone number, never by HEX.

Packaging and labels

Spot inks hold colour across cardboard, foil and plastic where CMYK process printing drifts.

Signage and vehicles

Vinyl and paint suppliers match to Pantone references; a HEX code alone leaves the shade to guesswork.

Auditing a palette

Check how printable a screen palette is: colours with Delta E above 5 need a print-safe alternative before launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a HEX code to Pantone?

Paste the HEX code (for example #E4002B) into the converter or pick the colour with the colour picker. The tool converts it to the CIELAB colour space and measures the Delta E distance to every one of the 1,213 Pantone Coated colours, then lists the closest matches with a quality rating. Copy the Pantone name with one click.

Is there an exact Pantone match for every HEX colour?

No. HEX describes light on a screen (sRGB), while Pantone colours are pre-mixed inks. Many screen colours, especially saturated primaries, sit outside the Pantone gamut. The converter always returns the nearest colours and shows the Delta E so you can judge how close the match really is.

What Pantone colour is closest to #FF0000?

Pure sRGB red (#FF0000) has no close Pantone Coated equivalent; the nearest is PANTONE 2002 C at a Delta E of about 14.1, which is only an approximation. Brand reds are usually defined from a Pantone swatch first, for example PANTONE 185 C, whose HEX value is #E4002B.

How do I convert Pantone to HEX?

Switch to the Pantone → HEX tab and type the code or name, such as 185 C, Reflex Blue or Cool Gray 9. The tool shows the HEX, RGB and CMYK values for every matching Pantone Coated colour, with a copy button for the HEX code.

What does Delta E mean in the results?

Delta E (ΔE) is the perceptual distance between two colours in CIELAB space. Below 1 is indistinguishable, 1 to 2 is excellent, 2 to 3.5 is good, 3.5 to 5 is fair, and above 5 is a visibly different colour. The converter uses the CIE76 formula.

Why does the Pantone swatch look different from my HEX colour on screen?

Screens emit light (additive RGB) while printed inks reflect it (subtractive). Monitor calibration, paper stock and coating all change how a Pantone ink appears. Use the Delta E rating as a guide and confirm critical colours against a physical Pantone guide.

Can I enter 3-digit HEX codes like #F00?

Yes. Three-digit shorthand is expanded automatically (#F00 becomes #FF0000). Upper and lower case and a missing # are all accepted.

What is the difference between Coated (C) and Uncoated (U) Pantone colours?

The same Pantone number is printed on glossy coated paper (C) or matte uncoated paper (U) and looks different on each. This converter matches against the Coated library, which is the reference most brand guidelines use.

Are HEX and RGB the same colour?

Yes. A HEX code is just the RGB triplet written in hexadecimal: #E4002B is RGB(228, 0, 43). If you already have RGB values, the RGB to Pantone converter accepts them directly with sliders.

Is the HEX to Pantone converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and every calculation runs in your browser; no colour data is sent to a server. Pantone® is a trademark of Pantone LLC and the colour values are approximations for reference.
