How to point a domain to 20i's nameservers

Add the domain to your 20i account first, then change the nameservers at the domain's registrar to ns1–4.stackdns.com. Nothing is copied in the switch.

Your visitors keep reaching the old host until resolvers follow the new delegation.

Leaving 20i? Add every record at the new host first, then change the nameservers, and keep 20i's zone answering for the .com referral's 2 days.

Copy your records first (MX first) into the package: Manage Hosting → Manage DNS.

Nothing is copied when the nameservers change: the zone at 20i starts with what you add.

  3. 3The wait: the .com registry

Is my domain's DNS at 20i?

Ask one of 20i's nameservers directly, with recursion off: a domain it holds comes back with the aa flag and its own SOA; one it doesn't hold gets REFUSED.

The check above does this at every 20i server for your domain, then compares each record with what Google and Cloudflare hand out.

What are 20i's MX records?

StackMail uses mx.stackmail.com as its MX records, and spf.stackmail.com as its SPF include.

They sit in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted: change the nameservers without them and mail stops. What breaks in a move

How to check if a website is hosted on 20i

Look at the site's address, not its nameservers: 20i's websites run on AS48254, while its nameservers answer from Google Cloud (AS396982).

So a domain can use 20i's DNS and be hosted elsewhere, or the other way round. The Hosting Checker reads the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers together.

20i nameservers: FAQ

What are 20i's nameservers?

20i's nameservers are ns1.stackdns.com, ns2.stackdns.com, ns3.stackdns.com, and ns4.stackdns.com. Point a domain there at its registrar, after adding the domain to your 20i account, then check the zone on this page before you switch. Every 20i zone uses these four; resellers' Virtual Nameservers rename them but resolve to the same four addresses.

How do I change my nameservers to 20i?

Copy your records first (MX first) into the package: Manage Hosting → Manage DNS. Change the nameservers at your registrar to ns1 to ns4.stackdns.com. Wait 6 to 8 hours, up to 24, for the change to take effect. Then check the zone with the tool on this page before you switch.

How long does a nameserver change to 20i take?

20i says up to 24 hours. The real bound is the registry's NS TTL: the .com registry hands out a delegation for 2 days, so some resolvers keep asking the old nameservers that long. Keep the old host's zone answering until then, and compare both zones before deleting anything.

Can I use 20i's DNS without its hosting?

Only for domains registered with 20i. Domains registered at 20i get DNS management in Manage Domains without hosting; another domain reaches it only through a hosting package. A domain registered elsewhere can use 20i's nameservers once it's added to a hosting plan or site; 20i doesn't document a DNS-only service for it.

Does 20i support DNSSEC?

Only in some cases. 20i signs a domain only when it is registered at 20i, uses 20i's nameservers and is hosted there: Options > Manage > DNSSEC Protection. Where it isn't offered, turn DNSSEC off at the registrar before you point the domain to 20i, or validating resolvers will reject every answer.

What are 20i's MX records?

StackMail uses mx.stackmail.com, with the SPF include spf.stackmail.com. They belong in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted, so add them at the new host before you move the nameservers away from 20i, or mail stops reaching the mailboxes.

Is a site hosted on 20i if it uses 20i's nameservers?

Not necessarily: nameservers say where the DNS is, not the website. 20i's nameservers answer from Google Cloud (AS396982), while its web servers are on AS48254. Look up the site's address, or run the Hosting Checker, which matches the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers.

Do 20i's reseller nameservers work like ns1.stackdns.com?

Yes. 20i's Virtual Nameservers let a reseller replace stackdns with its own brand, such as ns1 to ns4 on the reseller's own domain, and each branded name resolves to one of the same four 20i addresses. DNS stays managed in the 20i account. That's why the check on this page recognises 20i by address, not only by name.

Which MX record does 20i's StackMail use?

StackMail uses one MX host, mx.stackmail.com, and a domain on 20i's nameservers gets it automatically, along with smtp, pop3 and imap host names. Its SPF record is v=spf1 include:spf.stackmail.com a mx -all, added to every new hosting package unless the account opts out in Account Preferences.
