Namecheap Nameservers

Namecheap runs more than one nameserver set: dns1 + dns2.registrar-servers.com for domains registered with Namecheap, and the others below. Copy yours, then check your domain's zone at Namecheap.

How to point a domain to Namecheap's nameservers

Add the domain to your Namecheap account first, then enter the Namecheap set you use, such as dns1 + dns2.registrar-servers.com, at the domain's registrar. Nothing is copied in the switch.

Your visitors keep reaching the old host until resolvers follow the new delegation.

Leaving Namecheap? Add every record at the new host first, then change the nameservers, and keep Namecheap's zone answering for the .com referral's 2 days.

Is my domain's DNS at Namecheap?

Ask one of Namecheap's nameservers directly, with recursion off: a domain it holds comes back with the aa flag and its own SOA; one it doesn't hold gets REFUSED.

The check above does this at every Namecheap server for your domain, then compares each record with what Google and Cloudflare hand out.

What are Namecheap's MX records?

Namecheap Private Email uses mx1.privateemail.com (priority 10) and mx2.privateemail.com (priority 10) as its MX records, and spf.privateemail.com as its SPF include.

They sit in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted: change the nameservers without them and mail stops. What breaks in a move

How to check if a website is hosted on Namecheap

Look at the site's address, not its nameservers: Namecheap's websites run on AS22612, while its nameservers answer from Vercara UltraDNS (AS12008).

So a domain can use Namecheap's DNS and be hosted elsewhere, or the other way round. The Hosting Checker reads the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers together.

Namecheap nameservers: FAQ

What are Namecheap's nameservers?

Namecheap runs several sets: BasicDNS (dns1 + dns2.registrar-servers.com), Web hosting (dns1 + dns2.namecheaphosting.com), FreeDNS (freedns1–5.registrar-servers.com), and PremiumDNS (pdns1 + pdns2.registrar-servers.com). Which one a domain uses depends on the product. Point the domain at the set for yours, then check the zone on this page before you switch. BasicDNS and the hosting set share the same two addresses; records on the hosting set live in cPanel's Zone Editor.

How do I change my nameservers to Namecheap?

Pick the set: BasicDNS with a Namecheap domain, the hosting set for a Shared Hosting plan. Set the nameservers in Domain List → Manage → Nameservers, or at your other registrar. Wait up to 24 hours: Namecheap says longer only in rare cases. Then check the zone with the tool on this page before you switch.

How long does a nameserver change to Namecheap take?

Namecheap says up to 24 hours. The real bound is the registry's NS TTL: the .com registry hands out a delegation for 2 days, so some resolvers keep asking the old nameservers that long. Keep the old host's zone answering until then, and compare both zones before deleting anything.

Can I use Namecheap's DNS without its hosting?

Yes. FreeDNS is free for a domain registered elsewhere, and PremiumDNS, a paid plan, works with any registrar. Point the domain's nameservers to the ones Namecheap gives you, then add the records your site and mail need, since the new zone starts empty. Check it on this page before you switch.

Does Namecheap support DNSSEC?

Only in some cases. BasicDNS and PremiumDNS have a DNSSEC toggle in Advanced DNS with automatic keys; the Shared Hosting nameservers don't support it. Where it isn't offered, turn DNSSEC off at the registrar before you point the domain to Namecheap, or validating resolvers will reject every answer.

What are Namecheap's MX records?

Namecheap Private Email uses mx1.privateemail.com (priority 10) and mx2.privateemail.com (priority 10), with the SPF include spf.privateemail.com. They belong in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted, so add them at the new host before you move the nameservers away from Namecheap, or mail stops reaching the mailboxes.

Is a site hosted on Namecheap if it uses Namecheap's nameservers?

Not necessarily: nameservers say where the DNS is, not the website. Namecheap's nameservers answer from Vercara UltraDNS (AS12008), while its web servers are on AS22612. Look up the site's address, or run the Hosting Checker, which matches the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers.

What's the difference between registrar-servers.com and namecheaphosting.com?

dns1 and dns2.registrar-servers.com are BasicDNS, the default for domains registered with Namecheap, edited in the Advanced DNS tab. dns1 and dns2.namecheaphosting.com serve Shared Hosting plans, with records in cPanel's Zone Editor. FreeDNS (freedns1 to freedns5) and PremiumDNS (pdns1 and pdns2) use registrar-servers.com too. Pick the set for the product your domain uses.

Can I use Namecheap DNS for a domain registered elsewhere?

Yes, two ways. FreeDNS is free: enrol the domain under Domains → FreeDNS, then set at least two of freedns1 to freedns5.registrar-servers.com at your registrar within 10 days. PremiumDNS is paid and works with any registrar, using pdns1 and pdns2.registrar-servers.com. Either way, add your records at Namecheap first, since the new zone starts empty.
