Squarespace Nameservers

Squarespace runs more than one nameserver set: connect1 + connect2.squarespacedns.com for a domain registered elsewhere, and the others below. Copy yours, then check your domain's zone at Squarespace.

How to point a domain to Squarespace's nameservers

Add the domain to your Squarespace account first, then enter the Squarespace set you use, such as connect1 + connect2.squarespacedns.com, at the domain's registrar. Nothing is copied in the switch.

Your visitors keep reaching the old host until resolvers follow the new delegation.

Leaving Squarespace? Add every record at the new host first, then change the nameservers, and keep Squarespace's zone answering for the .com referral's 2 days.

Is my domain's DNS at Squarespace?

Ask the set your domain uses, with recursion off: a zone it holds comes back with the aa flag and its SOA; a Squarespace server of another set answers REFUSED, even for a Squarespace zone.

The check above does this at every Squarespace server for your domain, then compares each record with what Google and Cloudflare hand out.

What are Squarespace's MX records?

Squarespace's email is Google Workspace, sold through Squarespace: its MX records start with aspmx.l.google.com at priority 1, then four backups.

They sit in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted: change the nameservers without them and mail stops. What breaks in a move

How to check if a website is hosted on Squarespace

Look at the site's address, not its nameservers: Squarespace's websites run on AS53831, while its nameservers answer from NetActuate (AS63911).

So a domain can use Squarespace's DNS and be hosted elsewhere, or the other way round. The Hosting Checker reads the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers together.

Squarespace nameservers: FAQ

What are Squarespace's nameservers?

Squarespace runs several sets: Nameserver Connect (connect1 + connect2.squarespacedns.com) and Squarespace domains (ns0N · nsaN … nseN.squarespacedns.com). Which one a domain uses depends on the product. Point the domain at the set for yours, then check the zone on this page before you switch. Squarespace's six sets refuse each other's zones: a domain answers only on the set its own delegation names.

How do I change my nameservers to Squarespace?

Connect the domain to an active site: Domains panel > Use a domain I own. Enter the two names shown at your registrar, starting from its default nameservers. Wait 24 to 48 hours until the domain shows Connected. Then check the zone with the tool on this page before you switch.

How long does a nameserver change to Squarespace take?

Squarespace says up to 48 hours. The real bound is the registry's NS TTL: the .com registry hands out a delegation for 2 days, so some resolvers keep asking the old nameservers that long. Keep the old host's zone answering until then, and compare both zones before deleting anything.

Can I use Squarespace's DNS without its hosting?

Not as a separate service. A domain registered elsewhere can only be connected to an active Squarespace site, on a free trial or a paid plan. So point the nameservers to Squarespace only once the domain is added to your plan, then check the zone on this page before you switch.

Does Squarespace support DNSSEC?

Yes, on its own nameservers. Squarespace turns DNSSEC on automatically for its domains whose extension supports it; custom nameservers turn it off. If the domain is registered elsewhere, its registrar has to publish the zone's DS record, or validating resolvers reject it. Turn DNSSEC off before you move the nameservers away from Squarespace.

What are Squarespace's MX records?

Squarespace's email is Google Workspace, sold through Squarespace, whose MX records start with aspmx.l.google.com at priority 1. They belong in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted, so copy them to the new host before you move the nameservers away from Squarespace, or mail stops arriving.

Is a site hosted on Squarespace if it uses Squarespace's nameservers?

Not necessarily: nameservers say where the DNS is, not the website. Squarespace's nameservers answer from NetActuate (AS63911), while its web servers are on AS53831. Look up the site's address, or run the Hosting Checker, which matches the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers.

Should I use Nameserver Connect or DNS Connect at Squarespace?

Nameserver Connect moves the domain's DNS to Squarespace, which offers it for GoDaddy, Namecheap and Network Solutions domains. DNS Connect keeps DNS at your provider and adds two CNAME and four A records. Pick DNS Connect when a service such as Cloudflare or AWS needs its own nameservers, since Nameserver Connect removes all CNAME and some A records.

Does Squarespace host email?

No. Squarespace has no mail servers of its own: its email is Google Workspace, sold through Squarespace, which adds Google's MX records for you, either five ASPMX records or a single SMTP.GOOGLE.COM. If your mail is elsewhere, copy its MX, SPF and DKIM records into Squarespace's DNS before a Nameserver Connect, which removes records.
