Add the domain to your HostGator account first, then enter the names HostGator lists for it at the domain's registrar. Nothing is copied in the switch.

Is my domain's DNS at HostGator?

Ask the pair your domain uses, with recursion off: a zone it holds comes back with the aa flag and its own SOA. Another HostGator server answers REFUSED, or with a catch-all whose SOA belongs to the root.

What are HostGator's MX records?

HostGator's cPanel mail has no shared MX host: the MX points at mail.your-domain, priority 0, and its SPF include is websitewelcome.com.

How to check if a website is hosted on HostGator

Look at the site's address, not its nameservers: HostGator's websites run on AS46606, while its nameservers answer from Oracle Cloud (AS31898).

So a domain can use HostGator's DNS and be hosted elsewhere, or the other way round. The Hosting Checker reads the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers together.

What are HostGator's nameservers?

HostGator gives each hosting plan its own pair of nameservers on hostgator.com, such as cns335 + cns336. Your HostGator portal lists the two for each plan, and the check on this page reads them from the domain's delegation. Each server has its own pair: use the two your Customer Portal shows; other HostGator name servers won't answer for your domain.

How do I change my nameservers to HostGator?

Find your pair in the Customer Portal: Hosting → My Plans → Name Servers card. Replace the nameservers at your registrar: HostGator can't change them for a domain registered elsewhere. Wait 24 to 48 hours for the change to propagate fully. Then check the zone with the tool on this page before you switch.

How long does a nameserver change to HostGator take?

HostGator says 24 hours to 48 hours. The real bound is the registry's NS TTL: the .com registry hands out a delegation for 2 days, so some resolvers keep asking the old nameservers that long. Keep the old host's zone answering until then, and compare both zones before deleting anything.

Can I use HostGator's DNS without its hosting?

Not as a separate service. Its name servers serve the domains of a hosting plan; in Brazil, a registered domain without a plan sits on dns3 and dns4.hostgator.com.br, where the site isn't online. So point the nameservers to HostGator only once the domain is added to your plan, then check the zone on this page before you switch.

Does HostGator support DNSSEC?

Only in some cases. HostGator offers DNSSEC only on its VPS and Dedicated servers, with a toggle under Domains → DNS → Manage Advanced DNS Records. Where it isn't offered, turn DNSSEC off at the registrar before you point the domain to HostGator, or validating resolvers will reject every answer.

What are HostGator's MX records?

HostGator's cPanel mail points MX at the domain's own mail host on your server, with the SPF include v=spf1 a mx include:websitewelcome.com ~all. They belong in the zone wherever the domain's DNS is hosted, so add them at the new host before you move the nameservers, or mail stops reaching the mailboxes.

Is a site hosted on HostGator if it uses HostGator's nameservers?

Not necessarily: nameservers say where the DNS is, not the website. HostGator's nameservers answer from Oracle Cloud (AS31898), while its web servers are on AS46606. Look up the site's address, or run the Hosting Checker, which matches the address, nameservers, CNAME and headers.

Why do HostGator's shared servers answer for any domain?

A shared HostGator server runs a catch-all: asked for a domain it holds no zone for, it answers with the aa flag and its own address, under an SOA owned by the root, not by the name. Cloud servers answer REFUSED instead. So only the pair in your Customer Portal proves where your zone is, and the check on this page tests the SOA's owner.

Can I use my own nameservers at HostGator?

On a VPS or Dedicated server, yes: HostGator says those must use private (custom) name servers, set under Domains → Nameservers → Custom nameservers with each name's IP address. Shared plans such as Hatchling, Baby and Business can't use private name servers; they use the pair of their shared server.
